Courtney P. Lovett
Courtney P. Lovett is a graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, with a BFA in Visual Arts.
Courtney utilizes her artistic skillset for a variety of mediums and artistic disciplines, including illustration, character design, animation, graphic design, and motion graphics. As a freelancer, this has allowed her to work with authors and illustrate children’s books, create logos and product designs for small businesses, and illustrate specialized portraits for various clients.
However, her heart is with illustration, character design, and visual storytelling. As a Black American and a native of the DC, Maryland, Virginia area, her work reflects her heritage and upbringing by featuring predominantly Black characters drawing from her own Black experiences. This is most evident in her webcomic series The Smiths – a collection of short stories that chronicles the everyday life of a Black upper-middle-class family who values love, family, and faith. For her, The Smiths adds to today’s cultural shift of creating diverse and relatable stories from perspectives and cultures that are often underrepresented or misrepresented in art and media. Courtney values authentic representation and its potential to reach beyond race, gender, class, religion, and status by highlighting diversity in thoughts, interests, and personalities among individuals within their perspective cultures.
She gathers much visual inspiration from Disney’s iconic creations, which originally motivated her to become an artist. She also draws influence from unique styles of creators such as Aaron McGruder, Bryan Konietzko, and the children’s book author and illustrator Vashti Harrison. Additionally, she is inspired by filmmakers such as Ava DuVernay, Ryan Coogler, Issa Rae, Shonda Rhimes, Damien Chazelle, and many more. Her work references fantasy, sci-fi, superhero, and anime influences.
When Courtney is not creating stories, she teaches part-time as a digital art instructor at More Than Conquerors (MTC) Art Studios. You can also find her spending time with her loved ones, catching up on her favorite shows and movies, enjoying a good book, or practicing in her sketchbook.
