Ever since I was old enough to hold a pen in my awkward 5-year-old fingers, I have loved putting my thoughts down on paper in the form of poetry. When I was very young, I wrote about childish things like climbing trees and scraping my knees. As I lived through adolescence, I wrote about love and heartbreak, and God. And now that I’m older I’ve rediscovered the wonder of the world, and most often I try to capture that wonder from a child’s perspective.
The children I write for are of varying ages, from toddlers to teenagers. Because of this, my writing is just as varied! I write about imaginary dragons, basement monsters, beautiful things, gross things, goofy things, and yes, even love and heartbreak and God. Because those are some of the things that make up the strange and complicated world of a child.
I never want to forget what that world is like. And I won’t, as long as I keep writing poetry and books for kids.
